In Austria alone, 235,000 tons of dry sewage sludge are produced every year. Due to the fact that it is sometimes still permitted to be applied to agriculture, the pollutants and problematic substances it contains, such as heavy metals, accumulate in nature and have a negative impact on the ecosystem.
The future plan envisages the destruction of the sludge by incinerating the untreated sludge. As a result, valuable components are lost. In addition, the disposal of the sludge is associated with high costs of currently around € 300 per ton of dry matter. If the Austrian sludge is completely disposed of, this amounts to over € 70 million per year, excluding transportation and personnel costs.
The RSR process ("Recovered Sludge Resources") developed by us cleans the sewage sludge of the problematic substances mentioned, recovers them and creates recyclable raw materials from them at a cost that is between 40 and 70 percent lower than if they were disposed of. This is achieved by recycling the valuable materials, which are then made available to the natural cycle again, while the purified biomass can be used as a CO2-neutral biofuel. In future,
sewage treatment plants can be equipped with stationary plants or be approached by mobile treatment plants. This means that the entire sludge volume can be covered. Step by step in Austria, Europe and the whole world.
