Non-destructive testing (NDT) is the testing of components for structural irregularities and defects without impairing their suitability for use. In the age of Industry 4.0, the NDT of tomorrow faces fundamentally new challenges. With the advent of digitally networked things and devices from the consumer sector to every area of business and production (Internet of Things - IoT), through the use of smart data suppliers with highly integrated multi-sensory functionalities or as a result of advances in the evaluation of huge amounts of individual data (big data) using artificial intelligence (AI) methods, similarly high expectations are also being placed on NDT.
To meet this challenge, voidsy gmbh, an innovative deep-tech start-up for the development, production and distribution of a compact and smart imaging system based on the non-destructive testing method active thermography, was founded in 2022 by Dr. Holger Plasser, Dr. Günther Mayr, Dr. Gregor Thummerer and DI Gernot Mayr. The founders have 15 years of experience in the acquisition of industrial and cooperative research projects, their management and financial planning and execution. Through their activities at the Industrial Research Center of the Upper Austrian University of Applied Sciences, they were able to establish extensive contacts with decision-makers in industry and gain a deep understanding of the sector. The game changer in the sensor system presented by voidsy is a new type of multi-dimensional reconstruction process, which enables the first inline-capable thermographic tomography. In future, this will enable fast, non-contact and imaging inspection of components and monitoring of production processes. As a result, quality inspection can be carried out up to 80% faster and more cost-effectively for a wide range of applications than with the standard ultrasonic inspection method. Compared to other NDT methods, the technology presented by voidsy does not release ionizing radiation, does not contaminate materials and is characterized by high energy efficiency due to its very compact concept.
