Noise in the ear: How a headband helps to forget tinnitus

Source:(Welt der Wunder.de)

Until now, there has been no effective remedy to combat this chronic condition, which can be divided into two categories: objective and subjective tinnitus. While objective tinnitus can also be perceived by outsiders and usually has a physical cause, those affected by subjective tinnitus suffer from a noise that has its cause in the brain itself. Due to permanent misinformation in the auditory system, disturbing noises are perceived - without the influence of an external acoustic stimulus. The majority of tinnitus cases can be traced back to precisely this circumstance.
In principle, this "disturbing noise" is very individual in its manifestations and can vary in terms of volume and tone depending on the daily form and condition of the person affected - but the effects are often similar: concentration problems, insomnia, depression and in some cases even suicidal tendencies.

Klaus Grübl was also affected by the disease for a long time. Unwilling to accept his fate, the tinkerer and inventor from Austria developed a headband that is worn behind the ear and applies constant pressure to three acupressure points. Shortly after he started wearing the headband, he noticed a reduction in the volume of his tinnitus - and was even completely symptom-free a few weeks later.
After several years of research and development, the medical device ForgTin (short for "Forget Tinnitus") was launched on the market in spring 2021. By the autumn, the first scientific medical study had already been completed, resulting in groundbreaking findings: the 3D-printed earpiece worn behind the ear alleviates the symptoms, makes the tinnitus quieter and can even lead to a complete cure in some cases.

ForgTin tackles precisely the underlying problem: The synapses that generated the tinnitus due to a sudden hearing loss, for example, and make it an unpleasant everyday companion due to constant repetition, are "reprogrammed", so to speak, by the bracket behind the ear and the resulting impulses. An opposite impulse is triggered, which helps to forget the original signal and the link that has been created and learned. Over time, the use of the bracket ensures that the connection becomes weaker and weaker and, depending on the strength of the connection, the learned chronic tinnitus is reduced or even completely eliminated. The use of ForgTin does not require any changes in behavior in everyday life, no training with the headband and no changes in diet or adjustment of the previous stress level. Simply wearing the headband regularly during the day behind the affected ear results in the relief of tinnitus symptoms described above.

The main results of the medical study are consistently positive. The perceived loudness of the tinnitus was significantly reduced in almost 40 percent of the 39 participants within just six weeks. In addition, in contrast to the control group, which was not treated with ForgTin, the stress level and tension in the jaw and neck area also decreased significantly. Not only the general well-being, but also the associated - regained - quality of life were significantly improved.
In the meantime, stress-stricken patients without specific tinnitus problems are also using the headband with great success. This approach is to be the subject of a further study.
The researchers consider the scientific results of the existing clinical study to be extremely promising. They have already made recommendations to conduct further studies on the effectiveness of treatment with ForgTin. And the current data prove them right: after 12 weeks of wearing the device, 60 percent of users report positive changes.
The new findings and the experiences of the study participants give reason to hope that ForgTin can also help many other tinnitus sufferers around the world to alleviate their symptoms.
